GIVE US A BREAK. ENOUGH ALREADY. TIME OUT!
A typical user's scenario is some hybrid of the following:
Ø In general: Has some things they want to do and have to do. They desire to do it their way in a timely, painless manner.
Ø At home: May buy and sell on on-line auctions, catalogue collectibles, post mileage/expenses/stock value/warranty expirations/lottery results etc. etc.
Ø At work: The company/boss/co-workers have their way of doing things. Some of the same data may be entered into different systems. Some departments/divisions may have different software for the same function with different formats for customer/product/vendor files. Personal data may not be conveniently added to the work system e.g. the President insists that he/she has their own system. Exceptions such as multiple bill-to or ship-to, same individual on the personnel/customer/vendor file etc. cannot be handled, require workarounds or are confusing.
Ø A home business: a mix of the above with some unique twists.
Ø As a surrogate: custodian for a relative, volunteer work, etc.
Yes, multiple "real worlds". The user just wants to keep track of some things - not do without, not make a huge time commitment, not spend a lot of money, not become a software guru.
What to do
How about a custom solution? Historically, custom software has one major advantage. It better meets the user's requirements. Everything else is a disadvantage: high cost, high risk, takes forever. How about a standard solution? Buy a bunch of expensive full featured applications which meets some of the needs/wants and incur the learning curves and acquire the skills. Do we have the time, aptitude and inclination to continue with this madness? How about letting the user control their applications and data? The alternative: Computer Insights' Control. Standard solutions are provided for basic applications and customizing is inherent in the way Control works.
Control can also work in conjunction with other systems - for interim use, prototyping, data staging, subsystems to handle exceptions etc. Many file formats are supported for importing and exporting data. Control can also handle the myriad of other applications that just don't get done otherwise or are often delayed.
